Why am I unable to donate to an organization listed on Charity Navigator?
Donations can be made through the Giving Basket to approximately 1 million public charities and private operating foundations listed on Charity Navigator.
An organization is able to receive donations if it:
- is classified as an eligible IRS foundation type
- is in good standing with the IRS and the California Attorney General’s Registry of Charities and Fundraisers
- does not have a Giving Not Recommended alert.
What are eligible and ineligible IRS foundation types for nonprofit organizations?
See the lists of eligible and ineligible foundation types for tax-exempt organizations listed on Charity Navigator.
What does it mean when a nonprofit is delinquent with the California Attorney General’s Registry of Charities and Fundraisers?
When a charitable organization that is required to submit timely, complete, required filings and/or fees to the California Attorney General's Office fails to do so, its status on the California Attorney General's Registry of Charities and Fundraisers is listed as “Delinquent." If the delinquency is not remedied, the organization’s registry status is further changed to “Suspended" and/or “Revoked.”
Importantly, these requirements are applicable to all U.S. nonprofits, not just those headquartered in California. Learn more at https://oag.ca.gov/charities/delinquency.
What is a Giving Not Recommended alert?
Charity Navigator posts alerts to provide additional transparency and direction to donors to bolster trust in the charitable sector. The Giving Not Recommended alert is:
"Reserved exclusively for organizations, or alleged organizations, which have been confirmed through US legal or regulatory systems to have engaged in substantial fraud or misrepresentation relating to the organization’s charitable purposes or activities, as determined through a legal proceeding. This includes Fake entities, entities that misrepresent their charitable purpose, and organizations that have otherwise engaged in misconduct sufficient to force the dissolution of the entity.”
