Why am I unable to donate to an organization listed on Charity Navigator?
Donations can be made through the Giving Basket to approximately 1 million public charities and private operating foundations listed on Charity Navigator.
An organization is able to receive donations if it:
- is classified as an eligible IRS foundation type
- is in good standing with the IRS and relevant state authorities
- does not have a "Giving Not Recommended" alert.

What does it mean when a nonprofit is delinquent?
When a charitable organization fails to submit timely, complete, required filings and/or fees to the IRS and/or a state office, its status may be listed as “delinquent." If the delinquency is not remedied, the organization’s registry status may be changed to “suspended" and/or “revoked.” A delinquent or revoked nonprofit is not able to raise funds through the Giving Basket. Of note, starting in 2024, the California Attorney General’s Office increased its vigilance over this; other states may follow that lead. Importantly, these requirements are applicable to all U.S. nonprofits that raise funds in a state, not just those headquartered in the state.
What is a Giving Not Recommended alert?
Charity Navigator posts alerts to provide additional transparency and direction to donors to bolster trust in the charitable sector.
