Every month in 2024, we are highlighting the work of Give Lively member nonprofits in one category of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015.

The United Nations website states that “the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)... are an urgent call for action by all countries – developed and developing – in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.”

We find inspiration and insight from these selected nonprofits and hope you do too. Is your nonprofit engaged in similar work? Use the feedback tool at the bottom of this article to tell us about it.

SDG Goal 10: Reduce inequality within and between countries

The nonprofits

Syrian Community Network

Born out of the Syrian refugee crisis, this organization was founded to ease the transition of newly arrived refugees as they acclimate to life in the United States. Syrian Community Network (SCN) aims to maintain a community for new arrivals that is welcoming and combats the misinformation, politicization, racism and xenophobia that directly impacts refugee resettlement and, specifically, Syrian refugees. SCN strives to continue its founding mission in providing a holistic model of direct service and community building for all those in need, regardless of religion, ethnicity, immigration status or sexual orientation. The nonprofit maintains its original name, not to exclude other groups, but rather to honor the history of those original families who built new lives here. As a voice of immigrants and refugees, SCN champions refugee resettlement by dismantling local, national and international resettlement barriers and procuring support for refugees.

Syrian Community Network has used a Give Lively-powered Campaign Page to solicit donations for its “Caring for Our Community” Ramadan appeals since 2021 (see the 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024 Campaign Pages). It also uses a Branded Donation Widget to collect donations on its website.

Rian Immigrant Center

This organization aims to empower immigrants, refugees and international exchange visitors on the path to opportunity, safety and a better future. Rian Immigrant Center is working toward a society where all are welcomed, valued and enjoy equitable opportunities and protections by providing legal services, resources, education and career services, and an international exchange visitor visa program, as well as advocating for just and humane immigration policies. As New England’s Welcome Center for immigrant and refugee families, Rian Immigrant Center seeks to be proactive, responsive and innovative in meeting the needs of immigrant families.

Rian Immigrant Center uses a Simple Donation Widget to collect donations on its website. It is also using a Campaign Page to fundraise in the lead-up to the Rian Immigrant Center’s 2024 Solas Awards Ceremony in November.

Plant it Forward

This organization aims to empower refugees to develop sustainable urban farming businesses that produce fresh, healthy food for the community. Plant It Forward (PIF) secures land, trains and mentors farmers, and facilitates sales to local markets. Located throughout Houston, PIF farms are cultivated with sustainable practices that enrich the land and support the surrounding community.

Plant it Forward used a Give Lively-powered Campaign Page, in combination with the Text-to-Donate text code RAINYDAY, to collect donations for its Rainy Day Fund. Plant it Forward uses a Simple Donation Widget to collect donations on its website.
