Every month in 2024, we are highlighting the work of Give Lively member nonprofits in one category of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015.

The United Nations website states that “the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)... are an urgent call for action by all countries – developed and developing – in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.”

We find inspiration and insight from these selected nonprofits and hope you do too. Is your nonprofit engaged in similar work? Use the feedback tool at the bottom of this article to tell us about it.

SDG Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development

The nonprofits

Science Communication Lab

This nonprofit engages students and the public through award-winning films that captivate and inspire a deeper connection to science. Science Communication Lab researches and evaluates effective approaches for science communication and innovative distribution methods. Its work is guided by the immense power of film to reach people where they are and make science accessible to all.

Oceanswide Inc

This organization aims to inspire students to become more involved in research about and conservation of the world’s oceans by providing hands-on observation of the secrets deep beneath the Gulf of Maine. Oceanswide combines the tools of the trade – modern technologies, specifically remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) – with a specialized, age-appropriate educational curriculum in ocean science, history and exploration. Given the opportunity to dive side by side with maritime professionals, students are empowered to continue working as ocean stewards.

Oceanswide uses three Give Lively-powered Simple Donation Widgets on its website to accept donations to the program of a donor’s choice.
