Why am I not able to donate to some nonprofit organizations?

A nonprofit organization is able to receive donations through Give Lively technology if it is:

  • classified as a Give Lively–eligible IRS foundation type
  • in good standing with the IRS and relevant state authorities.

What are Give Lively–eligible and –ineligible IRS foundation types for nonprofit organizations?

See the lists of eligible and ineligible foundation types for tax-exempt organizations able to receive donations through Give Lively technology.

What does it mean when a nonprofit is not in good standing?

When a charitable organization fails to submit timely, complete, required filings and/or fees to the IRS and/or a state office, its status may be listed as “delinquent." If the delinquency is not remedied, the organization’s registry status may be changed to “suspended" and/or “revoked.” A delinquent or revoked nonprofit is not able to raise funds using Give Lively technology. Of note, starting in 2024, the California Attorney General’s Office increased its vigilance over this; other states may follow that lead. Importantly, these requirements are applicable to all U.S. nonprofits that raise funds in a state, not just those headquartered in the state.
