Every month in 2024, we are highlighting the work of Give Lively member nonprofits in one category of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015.

The United Nations website states that “the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)... are an urgent call for action by all countries – developed and developing – in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.”

We find inspiration and insight from these selected nonprofits and hope you do too. Is your nonprofit engaged in similar work? Use the feedback tool at the bottom of this article to tell us about it.

The Nonprofits

Rescuing Leftover Cuisine

This organization aims to make hunger a thing of the past by being the critical link between excess food and the people who need it most. Rescuing Leftover Cuisine (RLC) uses a custom web application to crowdsource community members as rescuers to transport high-quality food from Food Donor partners to Nonprofit Recipients. In an effort to feed people instead of landfills, RLC's technology platform provides an efficient, streamlined user experience for all participants, each of whom is equipped with an online account and dashboard to view real-time metrics, schedule and cancel food donations and more. Since inception in 2013, RLC has rescued over 18 million pounds of food, providing over 15 million meals to individuals and households experiencing food insecurity.

Farm2People

This organization is a food justice nonprofit focused on securing local harvests and fighting hunger. Farm2People believes in healthy soil, prioritizing small- and mid-sized farms, lifting up disadvantaged growers and providing nutritious food to food seekers. Farm2People brings local farm produce surplus to food-insecure people through farmer-focused support. Farm2People is strengthening the local food supply chain by buying and distributing produce surplus in Los Angeles County, California, where 1 in 4 households experiences food insecurity, bridging the divide between rural agricultural productivity and urban need.

Lower East Side Ecology Center

This organization provides unique e-waste and composting services, environmental stewardship opportunities and educational programming to all New Yorkers to create an equitable, resilient and sustainable city. The Lower East Side Ecology Center has pioneered community-based models in urban sustainability since 1987. In 1990, it started providing locals with free food scrap drop-off opportunities, making it the longest-running program of its kind in New York City. The Lower East Side Ecology Center has also diverted over 10.5 million pounds of unwanted electronics from landfills or incineration since the inception of its e-waste program in 2003.
