Every month in 2024, we are highlighting the work of Give Lively member nonprofits in one category of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015.

The United Nations website states that “the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)... are an urgent call for action by all countries – developed and developing – in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.”

We find inspiration and insight from these selected nonprofits and hope you do too. Is your nonprofit engaged in similar work? Use the feedback tool at the bottom of this article to tell us about it.

SDG Goal 7: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all

We Care Solar

This organization envisions a world where all women survive childbirth, obtain life-saving care without unnecessary delays and give birth with dignity in well-lit health facilities. Health workers struggle to save lives in tens of thousands of health facilities lacking reliable electricity. Each year, 287,000 women and 1 million newborns lose their lives due to pregnancy and childbirth complications. We Care Solar promotes safe motherhood and reduces maternal mortality in frontline health facilities by providing health workers with reliable lighting, mobile communication and medical devices using solar electricity in 49 countries worldwide. Through its work, We Care Solar aims to give health workers “the power to save lives.”

We Care Solar uses a Core Profile fundraising page to collect donations through its website.

Unite to Light

Over a billion people live without electricity. Access to clean, affordable light and energy is critical to improving health, education and prosperity. Unite to Light (UTL) is dedicated to providing low-cost solar light and power to those without electricity across the globe. Unite to Light focuses on projects that help students study at night, equip midwives with the tools they need to save lives, offer help and hope to those suffering from natural disasters and provide light and power to our neighbors experiencing homelessness so they are able to connect to vital services and information. As of the end of 2023, UTL had distributed 229,262 lights to people in over 80 countries.

Unite to Light used a Give Lively-powered Campaign Page to fundraise during the 2023 Unite to Light the Night event.
