Learn about five nonprofits working to ensure quality education for all
Every month in 2024, we are highlighting the work of Give Lively member nonprofits in one category of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015.
The United Nations website states that “the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)... are an urgent call for action by all countries – developed and developing – in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.”
We find inspiration and insight from these selected nonprofits and hope you do too. Is your nonprofit engaged in similar work? Use the feedback tool at the bottom of this article to tell us about it.
SDG Goal 4: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all
Promise Project Inc
This organization is dedicated to helping underserved children with learning disabilities get the support they need to learn. Every day, children from families living in low-income communities fall behind in their education because of undiagnosed learning disabilities – disabilities that, if properly diagnosed and treated in school, would no longer hinder a child's mental health or academic, social and emotional development.
Promise Project has joined forces with Columbia University Irving Medical Center in conjunction with NewYork–Presbyterian Hospital to create the most comprehensive program in New York City committed to providing an educational path for underserved children with learning disabilities: Promise at Columbia.
At the time of writing, the “Donate Now” button on the Promise Project’s website leads to a Give Lively-powered Event Ticketing page, for its annual spring benefit event “Beautiful Promise 2024.”
Literacy, Inc.
Throughout the five boroughs of New York City – Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island – this organization facilitates programs that aim to connect family, school and community, and ensure that books are available and that children can access reading and reading support. Literacy, Inc is a scaffolding of support that increases both children’s and parents’ access to literacy-building opportunities, raises expectations, generates an understanding of grade-level literacy skills and provides simple reading strategies to support parents in helping their children, regardless of their own ability to read or speak English.
Literacy, Inc used a Give Lively-powered Campaign Page for its GivingTuesday 2023 appeal and a Core Profile fundraising page to collect donations through its website. At the time of writing, donors who tap the “Buy Tickets Now” link on Literacy, Inc’s homepage land on an Event Ticketing page for the 2024 Spring Gala.
International Call Organization
This organization is dedicated to building, establishing and maintaining schools, water wells, clinics and places of worship, and sponsoring orphans and widows in the most disadvantaged areas in East and West Africa. International Call Organization aims to motivate communities in the U.S. to assist impoverished countries and communities of orphans in Central Africa, Mali, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso and Ethiopia.
ICO uses a Give Lively-powered Branded Donation Widget to collect donations on its website.
Friends of Refugees
The mission of this organization, based in Clarkson, Georgia, is to empower refugees through opportunities that provide for their well-being, education and employment. Friends of Refugees provides programs that teach English to hundreds of moms and kids together, welcomes dozens of babies born to healthy moms, fills family kitchen tables with fresh produce from garden plots, helps launch new businesses and strengthens existing entrepreneurs.
Friends of Refugees links to multiple Give Lively-powered Campaign Pages from its website, allowing donors to support the programs they most connect with, including Refugee Family Literacy, a literacy program that helps mothers and children learn together.
Children of Shelters
This nonprofit seeks to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness currently experienced by over 5,000 youth in San Francisco, California. Through its educational, experiential and nutritional initiatives, and its best-in-class network of partners, Children of Shelters delivers comprehensive resources and services that bridge critical would-be gaps in the development of children, offering them joy, happiness and a future unbound by the complications of homelessness. Since the Children of Shelters’ Board of Directors covers 100% of its operational costs – and Give Lively provides the fundraising tech for free – every donated dollar goes directly to the children and families served.
Children of Shelters uses its Give Lively-powered Core Profile fundraising page to collect donations through its website. At the time of writing, the “Join Event” button in Children of Shelters’ homepage leads to an Event Ticketing page for its 8th Annual Spring Luncheon & 30th Anniversary event.
